Tiggy Winkles Nurseries

Tiggy Winkles run two nurseries in Castle Vale. We have been providing childcare since 1999, delivering a high quality service to our parents and children, and our latest Ofsted inspections returned a ‘Good’ rating.

Across both locations, we have 29 nursery nurses who care for your children, and additional support staff who are responsible for the management and upkeep of the environment and building, keeping our facilities fully risk assessed and providing a home from home environment.

We are also a training nursery and keep a permanent presence of trainee nursery nurses to pass on our experience to, as well as providing training opportunities for our current staff to improve their skillset and to gain further qualifications in child care.

With health and safety at the forefront of how we operate, Tiggy Winkles Nurseries are secure and safe, and all our nursery nurses and support staff are DBS checked and approved to work with children, leaving you with the knowledge that your children will be cared for and looked after for their entire time with us.

Thank you for taking the time to look at Tiggy Winkles Nurseries. If you have any further questions please call either nursery or our head office on the numbers on the back page.

Celebrations

At our nurseries we incorporate fun celebrations along with learning and therefore enjoy as many festivals and events as possible throughout the year! Regular visits from our photographer mean that these special moments are captured forever.

Parent Partnerships

Newsletters are produced for parents to see what their child has been up to and what’s planned for the up and coming months.

What’s On

We try to make Tiggy Winkles children’s time here as special to them as they are to you.

Festivals & Events

Apart from celebrating the most popular and well known festivals such as Christmas and Easter, Tiggy Winkles children get to enjoy celebrating many religious festivals such as Diwali, Eid and Hanukah.

For Chinese New Year, children get to taste treats from the other side of the globe including noodles and spring rolls, and in preparation for Easter Sunday they get to parade around the nursery for their parents.

Since 2007, children have been celebrating Bonfire Night in an extra special way at the nursery. The day, themed ‘Stay Safe and Play Safe’ sees children ‘light up the room’ with their own creations of tissue paper ‘fireworks’, bamboo stick ‘sparklers’ and their very own wish wall whilst learning a very valuable lesson on fire safety.

Fire Fighters from local fire stations give the children a fun, yet important talk on staying safe near real fireworks, they even get to take a close look inside the ‘big red engine’ and squirt water from a real hose!

The First Steps

Tiggy Winkles follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. We ensure that our staff support your child in their earliest years as we understand that children need to be given the opportunity to learn and develop new skills through play.

Early Years Foundation

We have carefully chosen a variety of activities to do throughout the day along with singing, story telling and nap time.

Our nurseries provide a relaxed and fun atmosphere, similar to home so that parents can relax in the knowledge that their children are cared for, and we help children develop their confidence ready for the foundation stage.

Merlin Smart Readers

A the start of 2008, the nursery made a New Years resolution to tie in with ‘The Year of Reading’ – to increase the literacy of all our children. We achieved this by launching the ‘Merlin Smart Readers’ book club. Since being introduced, the scheme has been welcomed by parents, allowing and encouraging their children to bring home different books each week to practice reading with them.

Merlin Play Care

As part of Merlin’s commitment to helping people get into work, Tiggy Winkles extended their services in 2008 to a brand new Before & After School and Holiday Care service, ‘Merlin Play Care’.

Open from 7am to the start of school, and from the end of school to 6pm, and for 7am to 6pm for Holiday Care. The age range is for children between 5 and 8 years and they are provided with snacks and meals (whichever is appropriate) from our normal Tiggy Winkles menu.

Please enquire as to pricing. – If eligible, parents may be able to claim part of their fees back through Working Tax Credits.

A Well Balanced Diet

Our nurseries strive to provide the best start in life for your child and recognise the importance of a well balanced diet. We provide healthy snacks and hot nutritious meals served straight from our kitchens.

Menus are carefully planned to ensure that your child is offered around 9 different types of fruit and vegetables each day and with a variety of food to ensure a well balanced, healthy lifestyle, in line with national Healthy Eating standards.

Achievement Days

Tiggy Winkles annual Achievement Day always sees a brilliant turnout of parents in the nursery where babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers are recognised for their successes throughout the year.

Achievement Day celebrates the main achievements of each and every child throughout the previous year at nursery and presents them with personalised awards and sees proud parents gain the satisfaction of knowing how well their child has been doing at nursery.

Children who are leaving the nursery ready for school have a ‘My First Graduation’ ceremony and receive a special, personalised album of their work and photographs during their time at the nursery.

Under 2’s Education

Our Under 2’s Education Programme follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, and focusses on three prime areas.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We love sharing new activities with the children to help them develop into well-rounded little people, giving them opportunities to let us know what they like and dislike and share their own ideas and feelings with the rest of the children. Co-operative play is at our heart, as it is important to us that your child can play well with others.

Communication and Language

We know communication is key, so we help your child cope with situations they may not be used to, figure out what they want, and help to articulate it. We help them grow their word base and speak politely to others, as well as listen to their peers.

Growing your child’s imagination is key, so we encourage them to be creative and come up with their own fun ideas.

Physical Development

It’s important to keep healthy, and we teach this right from the start in a variety of fun ways, taking part in healthy eating events and teaching what foods are better for your child.

We also help your child’s physical development through their age related milestones.

Each child has a progress tracker completed every twelve weeks, which monitors their progress. Staff provide stimulating and exciting activities, to help the children grow their skills in all the prime areas.
If you have any questions about any of our education programmes, please contact either nursery via the details on the back page.

2-5’s Education

When your child reaches the age of 2, four further elements come into effect.

Literacy

We send children home with a book each week to share with their family, and ask for your and the child’s comments. Books are a combination of fact and fiction, with a mixture of fun stories and pictures, and we use Jolly Phonics to help the children form the correct sounds of the words. We also help children understand how the story is structured and the correct formation of letters.

Mathematics

We bring in mathematics by skillfully hiding it in fun activities! Counting into double-digits and being able to place numbers in order, are just two of the elements your child will learn. We build up your child’s maths skills through carefully selected activities.

Understanding The World

For young people, the idea of past and present can be confusing, so we help them by relating it to their own experiences. We show them the differences between themselves and others through books, activities and games, and help them describe what they see.

Expressive Arts & Design

All the children will take part in musical & rhythmic activities, get to play with a variety of tools and materials, experimenting with colour and texture. We also help them develop their imagination through roleplay activities and imitating adult tasks such as story telling, developing them into a little creative ‘bundle’!

Opening Hours & Age Range

Our nurseries are open Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm for 51 weeks of the year (excluding Bank Holidays & the Christmas week). Tiggy Winkles have an age range for children between 6 weeks and 5 years old, and Merlin Play Care’s age range is between 5 years and 8 years of age. We also provide 15 hours of free childcare for 2 year olds in line with the EEE Government Funding (if criteria are met), and 15 hours free childcare for 3-4 year olds is available to all parents.
